All General Motors 2004 and later vehicles except the Pontiac Vibe and the Chevy Aveo are equipped with an oil life monitor system. This system monitors each vehicles driving habits. The system monitors things such as engine temperature, vehicle speed, outside temperature and other driving related habits. Periodically a message on your dash that says “CHANGE ENGINE OIL SOON” will appear. This message will appear when the system calculates that your vehicle needs maintenance. However maintenance is required once a year whether the light has come on or not. This page explains what is required when the light comes on. All GM vehicles other than all Cadillac’s, the Pontiac Vibe and the Chevrolet Aveo will require the “MAINTENCE I” package done the first time the message is displayed. The “MAINTENANCE II” package should be done the next time it comes on. The maintenance packages will alternate like this through the life of the vehicle. Other things on the vehicle require maintenance. They are also reviewed on the bottom of the page. THESE ARE MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO KEEP YOUR WARRANTY COVERAGE!

GM Recommends the Chevy Aveo and the Pontiac Vibe to have an oil and filter change and tire rotation at 5000 mile intervals. Other maintenance is recommended at similar intervals as the other models. Owners manual should be referred to for specific requirements on these models.

All Cadillac models require Maintenance II package each time the change oil soon message appears, except the passenger compartment air filter is required every 25000 miles.

  • Inspect brake system. Visually inspect brake lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding, leaking, cracks, chafing, etc. Inspect disc brake pads for wear and rotor for surface conditions. Inspect other brake parts including calipers, parking brake, etc. Advise of any issues noted.
  • Check engine coolant and windshield washer fluid levels and add fluid as needed.

  • Inspect suspension and steering components. Visually inspect front and rear suspension and steering system for damaged, loose or missing parts or signs of wear. Inspect power steering lines and hoses for proper hook-up, binding, leaking, chafing, etc. Advise of any issues noted.
  • Inspect engine cooling system. Inspect hoses for cracking, swelling, or deterioration. Inspect all pipes, fittings and clamps. Advise of any issues .
  • Inspect wiper blades for wear, cracking, or contamination. Advise of any issues noted.
  • Inspect restraint system, reminder light and safety belt assemblies to be sure that they are working properly. Look for any other loose or damaged safety belt system parts. Advise of any issues noted.
  • Lubricate body components, lock cylinders, all hinges and latches, including hood, rear compartment, glove box door and console. Apply silicone grease to weather-strips.
  • Check transmission fluid and add as needed on certain models.
  • Inspect throttle system on certain models for interference or binding and for damaged or missing parts. Advise of any issues noted.
  • Advise of any additional services needed at this time or mileage.
  • Inspect shields on vehicles with diesel engines or above 10,000 lbs GVWR. Inspect for damage or looseness. Advise of any issues noted.
  • Check transfer case fluid level and add fluid as needed on certain models.
  • All diesel models check air intake system
  • All diesel models fuel filter replacement (vans have 2 filters add  $53.24)
